Internet essayist Jim Bell has been sentenced to 10 years
in federal prison. On Friday, U.S. District Judge Jack
Tanner ruled that Bell would serve two consecutive five-year terms
for stalking IRS Agent Jeff Gordon. Bell has maintained he was
investigating abuses of power on the part of the IRS, such as the
agency's admitted infiltration of a political party. Tanner also fined
Bell $10,000. After Bell is released around 2010 (he was arrested
about a year ago, which should count toward time served), he'll be on
probation for three years and subject to regular searches and other
restrictions. Those include no contact with Gordon, limited Internet
access, and a ban on Bell using a pseudonym online after his eventual
release.
